Katrina, Here We Come.... Print E-mail

High-school aged youth from six Episcopal congregations in the Contra Costa deanery have come together to form the God Squad.   The God Squad’s focus is community service.  The congregations are:

  • Church of the Resurrection, Pleasant Hill
  • St. Anselm’s, Lafayette
  • St. George’s, Antioch
  • St. Michaels, Concord
  • St. Paul’s, Walnut Creek
  • St. Timothy’s, Danville
Each summer God Squad members choose a 10-day mission trip to help communities in need. Previously members have worked at a Head Start school in San Diego and an American Indian school in Idaho. This summer the choice was obvious-- to put their energies into rebuilding what Hurricane Katrina tore down.  During the period July 30-August 10 they will be working to rebuild an Episcopal church in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Elizabeth Powers,15, of St Anselm’s, who participated in the mission trips to San Diego and Idaho, says,  “I want to take the trip to Mississippi because Katrina is still a very recent tragedy, and I am once again able to reach out to those on the poorer end of society, perhaps this time with much more far-reaching effects.”

Another St. Anselm’s member, 15-year-old Calvin Sherwood making his first trip, says, “The damage Katrina created was terrifying, affecting thousands of people. I want to see it from the victim's point of view and actively participate in a group that can help make a difference.”

Currently, 27 young people and seven adults are signed up to help with reconstruction activities. You may not be able to fly back to Mississippi, BUT YOU CAN STILL HELP. Transportation costs (buses and airfare) and the $20 per person per day lodging fee means we need to raise about $750 per person or $25,500 total.  Your financial contributions help rebuild the Katrina-torn community and help our youth learn the importance of helping others first hand. Your tax deductible donation is much appreciated.  It should be mailed to:

Checks should be made out to Church of the Resurrection/Mission Trip.   We gladly accept your company's matching funds.
