The Rev. Elvin Woodrow Smith died December 12, 2004, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. A priest for 60 years, he served as vicar of St. Simon’s Episcopal Church in San Fernando, where he and parishioners prepared 22,000 bricks by hand to build St. Simon’s Episcopal Church. (Apparently they did a good job—St. Simon’s was one of the few buildings to come through the 1971 San Fernando earthquake unscathed). He served as rector of St. Patrick’s in Santa Maira, Canon Pastor of St. Mark’s Cathedral in Seattle, Washington, and rector of St. Clement’s in Berkeley. He is survived by his wife, Ruth, and two children Cameron and Kati.
