Highly gifted young musicians from around the world meet to perform a gala program of string orchestra and chamber music at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco’s landmark cathedral on Nob Hill.
The concert will be given on Tuesday, August 8 at 7:30 p.m. The program will include the haunting Vaughan Williams “Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis” for double-stringed orchestra, the famous Albinoni Adagio, as well as “Zwei Waltzes” by Dvorak. There will also be a chamber music gala of movements from some of the most popular string quartets including “The American” by Dvorak, Brahms’ a minor quartet, the Shostakovich Octet, the Dvorak string quintet, and others.
The concert is presented by Youth Music International, the National Youth Strings Academy, and the San Francisco State School of Music and Dance. The student-musicians range in age from 12 to 21. The National Youth Strings Academy’s members all reside in the UK; some are from Europe. Local participants are members of the San Francisco Youth Orchestra, The Crowden School, Berkeley Youth Orchestra, San Domenico School, Oakland Youth Orchestra, Sacramento Youth Symphony, San Francisco Conservatory, San Francisco State University, Oregon University, and U.C. Berkeley. Youth Music International (formerly the British & American Chamber Music Exchange) brings American students to England to play in prestigious and historic landmarks in London and Oxford with talented European and British musicians.
This concert is one of a series of three: the two other performances will be held at St. Mary’s Cathedral on August 2 and Mission Dolores on August 7.
