To remember those who landed at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I.
During World War I, as part of the British Empire, Australia and New Zealand were drawn into the war as men from both nations went in their thousands to fight side by side with Britain and its allies. The Australians were all volunteers; the New Zealanders were part of the conscripted armed forces. What had been planned as a bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stale-mate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915, the Allied forces were evacuated after suffering heavy casualties and enduring great hardships. Today, the "great defeat" at Gallipoli is commemorated in April each year.
