Rachmaninoff Festival Choir, a highly-acclaimed Maine-based ensemble of 80 singers formed in 1995 to perform works of the Russian Orthodox Church, will sing Sergei Rachmaninoff’s The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom with conductor Anthony Antolini and soloist Andre Papkov at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco’s landmark cathedral on Nob Hill.
The performance will be given on Thursday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. The rarely performed Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Op. 31 (1910) is notable for its rich and complex choral writing.
The Rachmaninoff Festival Choir’s recent recording of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom received high critical acclaim. The Choir has performed in many east coast venues, and in 2002 toured European Russia and Siberia. This is their first California tour.

In 1988 he published the first modern edition of Sergei Rachmaninoff's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom. His award-winning television documentary on this subject, "Rediscovering Rachmaninoff," has been broadcast nationally on public television. Andre Papkov is a graduate of the New England Conservatory and has been performing Russian sacred music for over 30 years. He is an ordained priest in the Russian Orthodox Church and serves as dean of Holy Protection Cathedral in Chicago.
