Grace Cathedral, San Francisco

Philippe Lefebvre, the titular organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris will perform on the treasured Alexander Memorial Organ at Grace Cathedral, San Francisco’s landmark cathedral on Nob Hill.

The recital will be given on Sunday, February 5 at 4:00 p.m. Featured in the concert will be several extended improvisations, of which art Mr. Lefebvre is an undisputed master, along with works by Franck, Liszt, Mendelssohn, and Duruflé.

Philippe Lefebvre is today considered one of the foremost representatives of the French organ tradition. His career as recitalist and soloist with orchestras has taken him all over the world and he has made a number of recordings. He is director of the Conservatoire in Lille, Professor of Improvisation at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique of Paris, and the Musical Director of “Musique Sacrée” at Notre-Dame.

The great Aeolian-Skinner organ at Grace Cathedral is one of the world’s finest and most famous instruments of its kind. Its 7,347 pipes comprise a massive orchestral sound that perfectly complements the gothic-style cathedral’s natural acoustics among soaring arches and stained glass.

This concert is one in Grace Cathedral’s series of free organ concerts on most Sundays from September to June, the nation’s premiere series in a major venue on a world-class organ.

Grace Cathedral is located on Nob Hill in San Francisco at 1100 California Street at Taylor Street.
